SMITHS GROVE WILL BE THE SMALLEST CITY IN THE COUNTRY WITH A BUC-EE'S

Buc-ee's, home of the world's cleanest bathrooms, freshest food and friendliest beaver, will break ground on its new travel center in Smiths Grove, Kentucky, on Monday, June 5, 2023. At 10:30 a.m. CST, Buc-ee's will celebrate the start of construction with a ceremony attended by local and state leaders who helped make the project possible. 

Buc-ee's Smiths Grove is the second Buc-ee's location in Kentucky. The first, Buc-ee's Richmond, opened in April of 2022.

Located at 4001 Smiths Grove-Scottsville Road, Buc-ee's Smiths Grove will occupy 53,471 square feet and offer 120 fueling positions. Buc-ee's favorites including Texas barbeque, homemade fudge, kolaches, Beaver Nuggets, jerky and fresh pastries will all be available. Visitors will find thousands of snack, meal and drink options, as well as the same award-winning restrooms, cheap gas, quality products and excellent service that have won the hearts, trust and business of millions in the South for 40 years.

Attendees of the Buc-ee's Smiths Grove groundbreaking ceremony will include Rocky Adkins, Senior Advisor to Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky; Mayor David Stiffey of Smiths Grove; Smiths Grove City Commissioners Bob Buehl, Buddy Marr, Steve Roney, and Eric Schroader; Warren County Judge-Executive Doug Gorman; and former Warren County Judge-Executive Mike Buchanon.

Founded in Texas in 1982, Buc-ee's operates 45 stores across Texas and the South. Since beginning its multi-state expansion in 2019, Buc-ee's has opened travel centers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Now, Buc-ee's is headed West with store groundbreakings in Colorado and Missouri.

Throughout the project, the Buc-ee's development team will continue to work closely with local partners including the City of Smiths Grove, KYTC and Warren County. Buc-ee's Smiths Grove will bring at least 200 jobs to the area, with starting pay beginning well above minimum wage, full benefits, a 6% matching 401k, and three weeks of paid vacation.

Pizza Inn, America's Hometown Pizza Buffet, today introduced The Pepp Rally Pizza at all U.S. locations, as well as those in Oman, Saudi Arabia, and New Zealand. Created with considerable consumer input, the new specialty pizza features a thin, crispy crust glazed with a sweet-heat sauce made of Mike's Hot Honey, Yellowbird Sriracha, and Pizza Inn's own signature pizza sauce, then topped with 100% whole milk mozzarella and three different cuts of pepperoni, including classic slices, cup-shaped pepperoni with edges that curl to receive a slight sear, and Pizza Inn's first-ever julienned pepperoni that bakes quickly to provide a flavorful crunch.

"The best just got better," states Pizza Inn's Chef, Patty Scheibmeir. The company conducted consumer taste panels with different variations of dough, sauce, and toppings, resulting in the new Pepp Rally specialty pizza. Seventy percent of the test sample declared that the honey-sriracha sauce provided just the right amount of savoriness, spiciness, and tang without being too hot or spicy. In fact, many of the research participants said they would be "very likely" to visit or order from Pizza Inn specifically for the new pizza, alone.

Co-founder and managing director Paul Ryan credits the success to the company's progressive workplace policies. The recruitment process selects candidates with the right mindset and attitude, while a structured induction program helps them settle in quickly. Flexible working arrangements and free overseas trips for staff have proven to be the company's two biggest drawcards.

Three employees were making use of the company's work-from-anywhere policy when Ryan was interviewed by AFR BOSS in March. One was in Buenos Aires, another was in Japan and the third was in Europe. The policy grew out of a pre-existing employee benefit that allowed staff to go on one of the company's package holidays for free once a year. Almost 100 staff have taken up the offer over the past six months.

The company has also introduced other policies in response to the demand for more flexible working triggered by the pandemic, including a 40% quota for office attendance - the equivalent of two days a week for full-time employees. Ryan says the company arrived at that figure after conducting a confidential staff survey and gathering feedback from focus groups. He says two days in the office gives staff plenty of flexibility while also providing enough time for in-person collaboration and the ability to sustain a strong company culture.
